Our section has become more comfortable, the existing facilities have been upgraded and most of all, we have been welcoming new members to our section on a regular basis.
Billiards/Snooker & Pool section is located about 50 meters away from the Club Building. It also shares a boundary with the Golf Section. The section building accommodates 7 snooker tables & 2 poll tables of International Standard, a Bar, and a lobby. The Section has 7 Snooker/ Billiards tables and 2 pool tables at the playing halls, Roberto’s bar, lounge terrace, well-furnished lobby, Conference Room and Television Room.
One thing is however quite certain and that is, towards the end of the 17th century the game of billiards was being played both in England and France, although not on the refined modern table as we have today in the world. Snooker is a very dynamic and highly technical game.
It is an indoor game that involves two players, with 22 balls. The section started its existence as a section in Ikoyi Club since 1976 and the first Chairman of the section was Mr. Ram G. Gupta.
A cordial welcome will always be given to members of the section where we now have seven excellent snooker/billiards tables and two standard pool tables covered with extra fast tournament quality cloths. Social snooker is generally the order of the day, but for the more competitive players, the section has seasonal league competitions twice yearly. These include over 60 snooker open matches, plus challenge matches with members.
The section is well organized and run within the Ikoyi Club 1938 rules and regulations. Membership is open to all and we do have junior membership. So why not come and have a few frames with us, with a view to becoming a member.
SNOOKER
Snooker is played on an English billiards table using 15 red, 6 colored and on a white cue ball. Points are scored by pocketing balls and forcing an opponent to give away points through ‘snookers’. It may be played by two persons or a team of pairs.
The Table
The playing area of a snooker table is 3.57m x 1.778m and the height of the table from the floor to top of the cushion is between 88.1cm to 87.6cm. ( there is a tolerance of +/-13mm for both dimensions). There are six pockets, the same as a pool table.
Equipment
The cue must be at least 91.4cm in length.
The main difference between billiards, snooker, and pool is with respect to the number of balls used. In snooker, 22 balls, including the white color striker ball, are used. The other colored balls are as follows: 15 red, 1 yellow, 1 brown, 1 blue, 1 pink, 1 black and 1 green.
In billiards, only three balls are used white, yellow and red and both the white and yellow can act as the strikers.
In pool, there are sixteen balls with numbers and stripes printed on them.
